Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid forgot something on Thursday evening. Kind of a big thing, actually.
Reid took to the Senate floor at 6:45 p.m. Thursday. He went to his usual spot and noted that some say we “should never acknowledge our mistakes.”
Then, he did just that.
“But I was on my way home and I knew I forgot something. And that was to come and close the Senate,” Reid said, according to a transcript provided by the Senate Periodical Press Gallery. “Here I am. We’ll do it now. I’m sorry.”
Four minutes later, the Senate adjourned for the weekend.
No, Intercepts reader, your correspondent is not going to make a cheap age joke about the 73-year-old Nevada Democrat forgetting something as important as allowing hundreds of Senate employees to go home — or make a flight out of town.
But I will note Reid’s omission instantly became political.
Shortly after the majority leader revealed his mistake, a verified Twitter account apparently operated by the Senate Republican Conference fired off a tweet about it.
This all happened hours after Reid sparred on the Senate floor with Minority Leader Mitch McConnell. The Kentucky Republican warned “his friend” Reid might “the worst leader here ever.”
Harry Reid had a very rough day. Who hasn’t wanted a bad day at work to be over, and the weekend to get started ASAP? Reid, embarrassingly, jumped the gun.
