Where does an interventionist American senator spend part of a two-week congressional recess? Mali, of course. At least if you are John McCain, a senior member of the Senate Armed Services and Foreign Relations committees.
“Impressive briefing w/ French Commander & troops in #Mali – honored to meet heroes who’ve saved thousands of lives,” McCain tweeted on Tuesday. Accompanying the tweet was the above picture of McCain appearing to share a laugh with French military commanders.
France is trying to help Mali’s government topple al Qaida fighters, who have overtaken much of the nation’s northern region.
The U.S. will continue sending aid to Mali, McCain said, according to the Associated Press (via ABCNews.com):
“McCain said the U.S. will continue to provide humanitarian aid and military assistance, including equipment, training and technology, to the French campaign to kick the al-Qaida-allied rebels out of Mali.”
McCain is there with Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, D-R.I.
